From the Club President

All three fields are open for flying.  You are encouraged to practice social distancing while flying at QMFC club fields.  Stay safe and happy landings!

FAA Update

The FAA recently announced rules that will limit model aircraft operations to 400′ in controlled airspace, and either 700′ or 1200′ in uncontrolled airspace.  There is currently no process to apply for a waiver to these altitude restrictions.

What Does This Mean for QMFC Flying Sites?

All three QMFC Flying sites are located in uncontrolled airspace and subject to the 700′ altitude restriction.

The 700′ Limits at QMFC fields is fine with me.  Should I be doing anything?

Yes!  While this ruling may not impact our club directly today, it is part of a larger trend with the FAA as they try to regulate the operation of drones in controlled airspace.  Model aviation hobbyists have a long history of operating safely within that AMA guidelines at our club fields.  However, in some cases like this one the FAA is developing rules to ensure the safe operation of drones near airports and applying those same rules to AMA flying club fields.

The AMA is actively working with both congress and the FAA to protect our hobby.   You can help too!

Contact your congressional representative and ask them tell the FAA to exercise flexibility with the 400′ altitude restriction.  The AMA has created a web form to simplify emailing congress.
